Nokia NM705i Phone Shows Up at FCC

Here’s a strange one for you. We come across phones destined for the Japanese market all the time. We also see handsets approved by the FCC. It’s rare, however, to see both tidbits applying to the exact same handset. That appears to be the case today, because the Nokia NM705i candybar is getting geared up for launch with NTT DoCoMo in Japan, but at the same time, the mobile phone is making an appearance at the FCC offices, seeking approval. I’d imagine a few radio swaps would be in order for the phone to work in North America, because it has been designed to work with FOMA (WCDMA 2100). Thankfully, ti also has WCDMA 800/850 and quad-band GSM, the latter of which would be lovely for AT&T.

Key features include an on-board FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, and some sort of camera. No word on pricing or availability.

Nokia N95 Gets Auto Screen Rotation a la Apple iPhone

Although Nokia is the world’s biggest cell phone maker, it has been largely overshadowed these past few months because of a certain handset sprouting out of Cupertino. One of the coolest features on the iPhone is its ability to automatically switch between portrait and landscape mode. Now you can enjoy the same automation on the Nokia N95.

Not possible, you say? Well, there is already an accelerometer inside the Nokia N95 so the hardware side of things is already taken care of. That’s the technical doo-dah that gets the phone to recognize whether it’s being held upright or on its side. For the software side of things, look no further than the rotateME software being released later this month.

Nokia Buys Mobile Advertising Firm

Nokia announced that it plans to acquire Enpocket, a mobile advertising firm based in Boston. Enpocket’s technology platform allows for mobile advertising campaign management and delivery across several formats including SMS, MMS and mobile Internet advertising. Nokia did not disclose the financial details of the deal, but it is seen as a move into the mobile advertising market, which is expected to become increasingly lucrative in the coming years as mobile companies develop Internet services.
